Hello, and welcome to my penultimate entry for ThursdayTales.
It’s been a wild seven months; from coming off of a pretty severe reality check both on the ObservationDeck and in my professional life in late 2014, I realized that I needed a change. To that end, I started doing something that I hadn’t done before: I started reading the weekly ThursdayTales Roll Calls and Round Ups... and I discovered that the community out here is beyond words. Utterly mad, truly brilliant, hilarious, poignant, terrifying, and heart-wrenching, sometimes all in the space of a single short story.
I’ve seen works of fiction that reinvent familiar worlds and characters in fresh, new ways, and I’ve seen original concepts imbued with enough life and vitality to light up the West Coast.
I’ve gotten to know some of my favorite commenters a little better and I’ve made some great new friends, people whose usernames will immediately attract my attention from now on whenever they speak up.
In this last seven months, I’ve felt truly humbled to be allowed to facilitate this blog. I stumbled into the running of it after our previous curator left us, and the Powers That Be were amused enough with my precocious post that they agreed to let me run it temporarily. Well, that ‘temporarily’ turned into almost three quarters of a year, to which I feel it’s only appropriate to paraphrase one of my favorite literary characters of all time, Bilbo Baggins: seven months is far too short a time to spend amongst such admirable authors such as yourselves.
So, to commemorate my last Roll Call, and my penultimate ThursdayTales post, I’m asking for fiction, fiction, fiction. If you’ve posted here before, please post here again this week. If you know someone who is a fiction writer, put a bug in their ear. If you have some old and musty work of fiction that you’ve done, dust it off, post it up, and link to it here in the comments. On Monday, I’ll post my very final ThursdayTales post here, and I’d like it to go out with a bang, enough to the point that I’d even suggest using the hashtag #ThursdayTales on your social media sites to spread the Roll Call to an even wider audience.
Now, I think I’m quite ready for one final adventure.
